Biggest Beauty trends of 2020

Year 2020 was quite a year! It had many highs and lows, and was a year to remember for many, for all the wrong reasons. Despite it all, beauty was often a constant comfort to people, even when locked up at home. 2020 offered a time for many to revise their skincare regimes, make homemade beauty and hair care products, and revamp their list of go-to product favorites.

As hair salons around the globe were forced to close, many people had to tend to their own split ends, their roots, and take responsibility for their own conditioning treatments. In home hair mask treatments were highly sought after while many others (who did not need to attend Zoom meetings) took the opportunity to give the products a break and opt for a more relaxed hair and beauty regime. Some choose to put away the hairdryer and tongs for months, in a bid to have beautiful flowing locks by the time they emerged from lockdown. ‘Easy to maintain’ proved to be a highly sought after trend in haircare this year, which undoubtedly our tresses will thank us for next year.

As hair extensions grew out, and gel nails became so long they fell off, indeed the biggest emphasis was on skin care. With more time on their hands at home, consumers were researching skin product and anti-aging ingredients, to optimize their nighttime routines and develop their own in-house facial techniques.

So with all that beautiful skin, what were the biggest trends in makeup? 2020 saw a big rise in experimental makeup compared to previous years. Multi-coloured and highly pigmented eye makeup led the way particularly in the influencer world online, and hot pink overtook red as the statement lip shade for the year. While general maintenance and upkeep were searched frequently, consumers indicated they were prioritizing strong structured brows and stained lips, to present a more ‘enhanced’ natural look for video while working from home.

Outside of the home, thanks to masks becoming the norm in most of the world in 2020, the spotlight has been largely placed on eyes. But probably the most revolutionary change to the beauty market has been the recent emphasis on makeup as skincare. Consumers now seek out products that contain skincare ingredients and benefits. Products that sit somewhere between makeup and skin care, such as tinted SPFs, BB creams, primers with skin nutrients and powders with moisturizing properties, are now much more in demand, and the ultimate goal of 2020 seems to have been to achieve a bare-faced makeup look.

Whatever 2021 holds in store for us in 2021, at least it seems we will all be looking our best selves!
